Fan began her book when she was ten and had lived in Syracuse, New York, United States for only three years. When she finished the manuscripts at age 12, she sold her novel to HarperCollins with a 50,000-copy first printing.[1] Birds, a lifelong passion of the author's, provided the inspiration for Swordbird. After awaking from a vivid dream about birds at war while simultaneously wrestling with her feelings about terrorism and September 11, Nancy wrote Swordbird as a way to convey her message of peace to the world.[2]
In 2008, HarperCollins released a prequel to Swordbird, called Sword Quest set 100 years before the time of Swordbird.
